Contrastive Studies On W.J.F Jenner's And Anthony C.Yu's English Versions Of Journey To The West Guided By The Manipulation Theory

Journey to the West,as one of China's Four Great Classical Novels,is loved by readers at home and abroad.It tells a story about how Xuanzang leads three disciples to seek scriptures from Buddha in the Western Heaven.The story is thrilling and exciting,interspersed with truths of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism,which is extremely interesting.At present,Journey to the West has been translated into many languages and is popular all over the world.Most of its English translations are abridged or selected versions.There are only two full translated versions ——W.J.F.Jenner's translated version(Hereinafter referred to as Jenner's version)and Anthony C.Yu's translated version(Hereinafter referred to as Yu's version).This thesis attempts to make a contrastive study on the two full translated versions of Journey to the West with the guidance of the manipulation theory,hoping to make contribution to the study of the English translated versions of Journey to the West and provide some reference for later researchers.With the guidance of the manipulation theory,this thesis makes a contrastive study on W.J.F.Jenner's and Anthony C.Yu's versions of Journey to the West from three aspects: ideology,poetics and patronage.Manipulated by the factor of ideology,the author argues that there are two main differences between Jenner's and Yu's versions: first,Jenner's culture deletion VS Yu's culture supplement;second,Jenner's domestication strategy VS Yu's foreignization strategy.Manipulated by the factor of poetics,the author argues that there are two major differences between Jenner's and Yu's versions: first,Jenner's version retaining the humorous effects of the original rhetorical device of puns VS Yu's version only conveying their meanings;Second,Jenner's version abandoning the rhythmic beauty of the original poems and only conveying their meanings VS Yu's version conveying both the rhythmic beauty and the meanings of the original poems.Manipulated by the factor of patronage,the author argues that there are mainly two differences between Jenner's and Yu's versions: first,Jenner's version using oral style to substitute the written one of the source text VS Yu's version retaining the written style of the source text;second,Jenner's version occasionally lacking in accuracy VS Yu's version always being accurate.This thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction,which mainly introduces the original and translated works of Journey to the West,research content,research purpose,significance and the structure of the thesis.The second chapter is a literature review,which is a summary of previous researches on the English versions of Journey to the West.The third chapter introduces Lefevere's manipulation theory in detail.The fourth chapter mainly contrasts Jenner's version and Yu's version of Journey to the West from three aspects: ideology,poetics and patronage.The fifth chapter summarizes the whole thesis.A contrastive study on the two English versions of Journey to the West can not only strengthen the public's understanding of this novel and the Confucian,Buddhism and Taoist culture behind it,but also arouse domestic researchers' attention to the study of Journey to the West.The thesis attempts to promote Chinese classical culture and allow more English readers to understand Chinese culture better.
