As globalization boosts the development of tourism, many foreign tourist companies are eager to enter the huge Chinese market by promoting their products in tourism workshops. In the mid-September,2019,the Austrian National Tourist Office held a tourism workshop in Guangzhou,China, where Austrian clients discussed with local companies about the development of Austrian tourist products in the Chinese market. This report analyzes the author's interpreting practice at this tourism workshop based on the Skopos Theory. The Skopos Theory emphasizes that the end justifies the means, and that translators should, based on their purposes, determine their translation strategies and methods so as to fulfill communicative purpose of translating. In this report, the author applies the Skopos Theory and its three rules to her tourism workshop interpreting.Bearing in mind the purposes of the workshop, speakers and herself as an interpreter, she tackled the challenges and helped her clients communicate smoothly. The report firstly introduces the task and process of the interpreting. In the main part it introduces the Skopos Theory and its applicability to this practice, and lists examples about the challenges in interpreting — redundancy, illogical language and unfamiliar terminologies which might interfere her to meet the goals.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, she analyzes various tactics—omission, logic integration and paraphrasing that could facilitate the communication and could help her succeed in the task.It is in the hope that this report may help green-hand interpreters cope with various challenges by adjusting their coping tactics according to different purposes,so as to obtain better cross-cultural communication and improve the quality of interpreting.
