A Report On Interpreting For The Training Course On Practical Technology Of Small Agricultural Machinery For Developing Countries

This report is based on the author's interpreting experience at the Training Course on Practical Technology of Small Agricultural Machinery for Developing Countries,which consists of several parts,such as agricultural lectures,Chinese-culture lectures,and field trips.In this paper,the author chooses one of her assigned interpreting sessions,namely,China's National Conditions and Reform and Opening-up,as the focus of this report.The report is divided into five parts.The first part is task description,introducing the background information.The second part is process description which involves pre-task preparation,the encountered difficulties including the trainee's impolite manner,the trainer's redundant expressions,incomplete sentences and unconscious mistakes,and post-task evaluation.The third part includes theoretical framework and case analysis,in which the author explores visibility consciousness and provides some coping strategies under different situations.The last part is conclusion,which summarizes major findings and limitations.The report finds that,firstly,an interpreter should be a culture facilitator.When some misunderstandings occur due to cultural differences,interpreters can use verbal or non-verbal methods to mitigate the anxious atmosphere.Secondly,a liaison interpreter can be a coordinator in some cases to save the speakers' faces and promote the success of the whole activity.Thirdly,accent is inevitable.Interpreters should equip themselves with the ability to adapt to different accents,which can be achieved through pre-task preparation and daily practice.Last but not least,pre-task preparation matters a lot which includes thematic knowledge,anti-pressure abilities and bilingual proficiencies.
