Yan Lianke, one of the Chinese writers that have attracted the world's attention in the literary circles in recent years,is good at making up surreal stories and dramatic plots. His works, which have been translated into many languages, have taken the fancy of translation scholars. However, most of the researches focused on Yan's representative works Shou Huo and Ding Zhuang Meng, and a few concentrated on the reception of his translated works in the western world. The novel Ri Xi,which was published in 2018,abounds with metaphors including novel metaphors, and its unusual wording and phrasing leaves a profound impression on readers at home and abroad. All of these make the translation of this novel unusually difficult. This thesis analyzes the English translation of metaphor in the novel Ri Xi from the perspective of Conceptual Integration Theory. The research is descriptive. Its contents are: On the basis of the existing studies, the metaphors in the Ri Xi are identified and classified; The conceptual integration network is used to reproduce the process of meaning construction in metaphor;Under the guidance of the Conceptual Integration Theory, the process of metaphor translation is analyzed.Taking metaphor in the novel Ri Xi as the research object, the purpose of this research is to analyze metaphor itself and its translation process in a cognitive point of view, based on the principles of Conceptual Integration Theory and its conceptual integration network, then to clarify the reasons behind different translation strategies. From the analysis,it is concluded that the process of metaphor translation involves both the construction and translation of metaphor and it is a process of concept integration. In this research, the Conceptual Integration Theory is appropriate in analyzing metaphor and its translation, especially for novel metaphors. The translation strategies can be summarized into three types: total-correspondence projection,semi-correspondence projection and non-correspondence projection,in other words, literal translation by keeping the original metaphor, providing information and turning metaphor into simile, and free translation without retaining the metaphorical expression. The translation strategies of novel metaphors are mostly the first one. Moreover, the translation of metaphor is also influenced by culture, context, type of metaphor and other elements. However, this research is only concerned with the meaning construction in metaphor itself and its translation from the perspective of CIT.This thesis aims at enriching studies on translation of Yan's works, testifying the importance of Conceptual Integration Theory in metaphor construction and its translation. This thesis provides some enlightenment for the translation of contemporary Chinese literary works, and also offers some references for future studies of CIT and metaphor.
