In his collection of essays in the 1950 s and 1960 s,"Meditations on a Hobby Horse",Gombrich quoted a sign of physiognomy,He cited physiognomy here,but did not dwell too much on the "perception" of "physiognomy" itself.Instead,he reflected on the metaphysics behind expressionism and the "fallacy of physiognomy" presented in the writing mode of Hegelian art history from the metaphorical meaning of physiognomy.Later,in other important academic works,his theory has also been praised,supplemented and developed.In his important academic works Art&Illusion and the Image&the Eye,Gombrich refocused his eyes on the physiognomic perception,refocusing the problem on the face in the portrait.The previous studies on image psychology based on the study of metaphor "physiognomy",as well as thoughts on the expression and understanding of art,converge here.Gombrich aims to reveal that art is not the direct expression of the artist's emotion,nor the transcendent manifestation of the "spirit of The Times".The possibility of access to the inner soul lies in the fact that art opens the locks of the senses.His speech on phase perception is related to the clarification of cognitive psychology,but also related to the meaning of images and the explanation of the various aspects of reading art,so it can be seen that what he really CARES about is the problem of art and understanding.If astronomy is to study celestial bodies by means of physics and get rid of astrology,the philosophical and psychological methods adopted by Gombrich clarify the fictions of language,expel the false ideas left over from history,and make art theory get rid of physiographitics.
