Such problems as unreasonable subjects, lacking of service spirit and incomplete contents have been revealed in domestic universities’ student handbooks,so this report selects the Student Charter of Delft University of Technology for translation research, hoping to provide some references for domestic universities.According to Katharina Reiss’ s text typology, the author defines them as informative text supplemented by operative text in accordance with its own language characteristics, which plays an important role in expressing the accuracy and practicability of target text. Therefore, how to show its readability and preciseness on the basis of accurately conveying the meaning of the original text, and then to promote its practicability,is the focus of this report.According to linguistic characteristics of informative texts and differences between Chinese and English expressions, this report analyzes the difficulties and challenges in translation, expounding them from vocabulary, sentence and discourse.Nouns and model verbs reflect the accuracy and preciseness of the text.Though verification, official or popular versions of nouns can be found, and literal translation will be added when necessary, while model verbs can be translated via identifying their meanings so as to find their Chinese counterparts. At the same time,in order to highlight the language characteristics of administrative regulations, the translation of functional words follows the principle of concision.Passive sentences and long difficult sentences are common difficulties in informative texts, and this text is not an exception.Considering the differences in these two languages, the author mainly adopts two methods to translate the former: changing passive voice into active voice and using Chinese words involving passive meaning. The long difficult sentences are processed by cutting off sentences, restructuring and polishing, etc. In addition, the format of disjunctive sentences all follows that of the original text, but their contents are properly changed to enhance its readability. The last is discourse translation. When addressing discourse links, the author literally translates most explicit conjunctions, and supplements some associated or cohesive words. In terms of discourse coherence, clarifying logical sequence is very important before translation. In this text, sequential translation is adopted.
