English reading is one of the main input forms in English learning and plays an important role in junior middle school English teaching.To improve students' English reading ability is one of the important teaching goals in junior middle school and also one of the important means to cultivate students' comprehensive language ability.At present,middle school English teaching mainly adopts a teacher-centered teaching method,which will affect students' interest and ability in reading to some extent.In recent years,Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT)has been attracting the attention of scholars at home and abroad.It centers on learners and trains students' ability to complete tasks with target language.This study attempts to apply TBLT into English reading class of junior middle school and prove the effectiveness of TBLT in reading class through teaching experiment.This study mainly answers three questions:(1)How to apply TBLT in junior middle school English reading class?(2)What are the effects of applying TBLT in English reading class on students' reading performance?(3)How does the application of TBLT in English reading class influence students' interest in English reading? The study was carried out in two parallel classes of Grade 3 in a junior middle school in Shanghai.One class was experimental class adopting TBLT;the other class was controlled class where traditional teaching method was adopted.The experiment lasted for one semester.Before the experiment,students in both classes were pretested to ensure that their reading levels were similar.In addition,a questionnaire survey was conducted among the students in the experimental class to know their English reading interest.After a semester's teaching experiment,a reading post-test was carried out in the two classes.At the same time,a post-questionnaire and an interview were conducted on the students in the experimental class.After a semester of teaching experiment,the results show that TBLT can improve students' reading ability.Compared with the control class,students in the experimental class achieved significant improvement in their English reading scores.Secondly,it is found that there was significant positive change in the learning desire,learning attitude and learning behavior of the students in experimental class,which indicates the increase of students' English reading interest.Therefore,the adaptation of TBLT in English reading class can improve students' reading interest.This study provides a reference for effective English reading teaching in junior middle school and the teachers can help students improve their reading interest and ability through proper task design and evaluation based on TBLT.
