As a leading figure of late Romantic-era composers,Mahler and his works occupy an important position in music history and composition theory research.Although numerous books and articles have been written about him,there are still aspects of his works that can still be examined.This thesis focuses on Mahler's Sixth Symphony,and investigates the details of its composition techniques and meanings behind the music.As he was a maestro of opera conducting,the analysis includes the impact and effects of his role as a conductor on his composition and expressions of music.This thesis intends to cut to the heart of Mahler's large scale orchestration and role as a conductor to better understand his characteristic composing featuresThe thesis is divided into three sections,namely:the relationship between the core musical components and the complex overall structure,Mahler's unique composing methods that contribute towards his distinguished fragmented music style,and the impacts of being both a conductor and composer upon his music composition.
