Abstract/Summary:
With the help of economic development,China now brims with various TV programs. However, overseas publicity is not proportional to the diverse media.Since many factors play roles in the “Going Global”,the quality of subtitle translation counts a lot.In this report, the translator, taking a Chinese talk show You Hua Fei Yao Shuo as an example, translates the subtitle of its two episodes and finds it is difficult to express the intended meanings if the translator only considers the verbal modality. Therefore,by analyzing how verbal, image and sound interact between every two modalities to convey the representational meaning, the translator finds that, firstly, although the verbal modality is the main factor, translation should be affected by multiple modalities;secondly, the translator needs to observe the body language, the post-production sound and image to figure out the real intention of the speakers or achieve the ideal program effect;thirdly, depending on the text distinctiveness(text-transform or color variations),the meaning could be expressed by different forms;lastly,it is acceptable to use strategies include improper text-transform like grammar mistakes, adding or deleting of punctuation marks, vocabularies and annotations in the target text.Through this translation practice, the translator hopes to improve her translation skills;meanwhile,to provide references for other translators and to help the Chinese talk shows achieve better publicity.
