On The E-C Translation Of Verb Nominalization In Economic Text

This is a report about the translation of the book Emerging Market Megatrends written by Rajiv Biswas.It is an economic text of high formality.One of the most prominent features of the text is the frequent use of VN structures.The author read a lot of VN related papers and found that existing classifications of nominalization structures cannot fully explain the problems encountered by the author in the process of translating the text.Therefore,based on the research of other scholars,the author re-classified VN structures into different types according to the contexts and their collocations with other words.Emerging market consumption growth will be an increasingly important growth engine for the world economy over the next two decades.As one of the biggest emerging economies in the world,China has experienced astonishing economic growth in the past 30 years.In the process of its fast development,we should also keep an eye on the development of other emerging markets and the economic status of developing and LDC countries.Emerging markets in many parts of Asia,Africa,the Middle East and Latin America are still facing tremendous economic challenges such as poverty,inequality,weak governance and inadequate infrastructure.The book Emerging Markets Megatrends gives an introduction to the challenges and opportunities faced by these developing and LDC countries.This can help readers to know more about the economic status of those emerging economies as well as the living condition of people living in developing and LDC countries.This report is divided into four parts.Part one is a general introduction to the translation project,including the source text and its writer.Part two describes the translation process,including preparations before translation,and problems encountered by the author during translating the text,etc.Part three is the main part of this report in which the author discussed the translations of different VN structures with examples to support her idea.Part 4 is the conclusion of the translation practice.Typically,a VN can be translated into a verb or a noun.The purpose of this report is to find out in which case the VN should be translated into a verb and in which case the VN should be translated into a noun.It is proved that when a VN is used as terminology or when it is collocated with a lexical verb,the VN is usually translated into a noun or a noun phrase;and when a VN is used in the “VN + preposition + noun/noun phrase” structure or when it is collocated with a delexical verb,the VN is usually translated into a verb in the target language.Moreover,the “VN + preposition + noun/noun phrase” structure can usually be translated into a “subject-predicate” structure or a “verb-object” structure depending on the relation between the VN and the noun or the noun phrase.
