Shanghai Jinwei Middle School is an urban and rural fringe middle school.The Grade 6 the author teaches is made up of 4 local classes and 4 non-local ones.Local registered students account for about two-fifths and the remaining three-fifths come from different provinces and cities across the country.Two types of students have learned English in primary school,but the pronunciation pre-test shows that they are poor at spoken English.In addition,most parents do not have time or ability to supervise their children's study and the students' English learning almost completely depends on teachers,which brings great challenges to English teaching at school.Based on the actual situation,this paper puts forward that pronunciation teaching is indispensable in Grade 6 and focuses on how to carry out effective pronunciation teaching mode.In the initial stage of the research,present situation and existing problems of Grade 6 pronunciation teaching in Jinshan are comprehensively analyzed through questionnaire,pronunciation pre-test and interview.In view of practical problems,author compiled appropriate pronunciation learning materials to better pronunciation teaching.This paper uses Education Action Research Method,conducting one-semester teaching experiment,taking students and pronunciation teaching activities of author's class in Grade 6 as research subject,focusing on the inspect and analysis of teaching procedure and resulting consequence.As regards data processing,NVIVO 12.0 is used to sort and analyze interview information.SPSS 23.0 is applied to test the validity and reliability of the questionnaire and to compare and analyze the results of pre-test and post-test.The results show that author's class is significantly superior to other classes in reading phonemes,spelling the phonetic symbols of words,listening comprehension and oral expression.Therefore,it is concluded that based on learning situation,self-compiled pronunciation materials and selection of pronunciation content in textbook,the pronunciation teaching mode of ‘single phoneme-combination of phonemes-letter-word-sentence-dialogue' is feasible and effective.Combined with fun activities,it helps stimulate and cultivate students' interest in learning English,build up their confidence,get accurate pronunciation,develop faster rate in memorizing words and form preferable spoken English.
