A Report On The Translation Of The Memorial Articles About James Legge

This thesis is a report on the translation of the memorial articles about James Legge.The materials are selected from the articles published in 1897 in British newspapers such as HUNTLY EXPRESS,The Christian and The Independent and Nonconformist,which consist of eulogies,obituaries,funeral sermons and brief introduction to James Legge's life.They provided the detailed description of the funeral service,the eulogies and sermons given by different reverends,and the social evaluation of James Legge and his works for us to explore the main experience of James Legge.The translation of these original materials can help the study of James Legge in China with valuable clues and references.This report records the whole translation practice from the introduction,the process description,the text analysis,the case studies and the conclusion.It consists of five parts.The first part is the introduction to the translation task,including the background,content and significance of the task.The second part describes the translation process in detail,from the pre-translation preparation to the sorting out of the problems encountered in the first translation draft,the cause analysis,as well as the establishment of translation strategies,and then to the post-translation proofreading.The third part,focusing on the original text,analyzes the characteristics of the wording and phrasing,the background and the style of the articles.The fourth part is the case studies,using the existing translation strategies and theories to help solve the translation problems and make translation better.The fifth part is the summary of the translation practice,including the reflection of the past translation and the enlightenment for the future translation.
