James Legge is a famous sinologist in modern England.These translation materials are the letters written by James Legge to his wife from 1866 to 1867 and 1870 to 1872.The letters show Dr.Legge’s attitude and views on missionary cause,translation,marriage,life and other aspects.This translation practice can provide a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of Legge’s living conditions,personalities and his ways of getting along with others.Since few scholars in China take his letters as the object of study,the research can fill the gap in this field.When people talk about missionaries,most of them are acquainted with Matteo Ricci,Morrison,etc.,but know little about James Legge.Therefore,this study helps the general public to better understand the stories of missionaries in China.This paper mainly focuses on how to adopt appropriate translation methods to solve different problems encountered in the translation process.In this way,i t aims to help readers get familiar with the translation methods and skills of letter texts.At the same time,the writing style of the original texts and the writer’s sincere emotions conveyed through the letters should also be considered during the translation in order to discuss how to better express feelin gs based on faithful translation.To be specific,the translation issues that need to be studied are mainly divided into the following three aspects: In terms of vocabulary,the original text involves culture-loaded words such as dish names,Scottish,words with specific images in the Bible and words with historical connotations;For quotations,it quoted sentences from poems and masterpieces,such as John Donne’s Ode,Scott’s novel The Old Mortality,The Bible and etc.;From the perspective of style,letter texts are characterized by both colloquialism and epistolary style.This translation practice aims to help the author further master the characteristics and writing style of the letter texts,the nar rative mood of the writer and meanwhile,improving the translation level and capability of the author himself.At the same time,this paper aims to provide some reference and guidance for other translators in the translation activities of related genres.
