Lying refers to the concealment, falsification of facts or emotions with purpose through verbal or non-verbal means,in order to make others form false beliefs that the liar thinks. Therefore, lying is regarded as a dishonest and immoral behavior. However, for different purposes, people often have to choose between "lying" and "honesty" in their lives, making egoistic or altruistic lies.Since most lies have many negative consequences for families and society, researchers have been focusing on the classification of the causes of lying, the factors that influence lying, and the negative consequences of lying.Based on the existing research, this study explores the influence of self-control depletion and promise on egoistic and altruistic lying in order to obtain effective ways to reduce or correct lying behavior. At present, the research of self-control depletion on lying behavior, cheating and immoral behavior mainly focuses on egoistic lying behavior, but there are few studies on altruistic lying behavior, lacking the influence of self-control depletion on altruistic lying behavior and the comparison between egoistic and altruistic lying behavior under self-control depletion. This study took the rate of lying behavior as the dependent variable, and used perceptual task on computer,non-dominant hand response task and Integrity Undertaking to investigate the effect of promise on egoistic and altruistic lying behavior under self-control depletion. The study consists of two parts: study 1 discusses the influence of self-control depletion on egoistic and altruistic lying behavior. The results show that self-control depletion condition can affect lying behavior.Individuals with high depletion will show more egoistic lying behavior, while individuals with high depletion will show more altruistic lying behavior. The size of the lie will have an impact on the lying behavior.Compared with the obvious condition, the subjects in the fuzzy condition showed more lying behaviors.Study 2 explored the effect of commitment on egoistic and altruistic lying behaviors under the condition of self-control loss. The results showed that whether there was commitment or not would affect lying behaviors.Individuals with commitment would show less egoistic lying behaviors, whileindividuals with promise would show less altruistic lying behaviors.Self-control depletion and promise have a significant interaction effect on egoistic lying behavior.Individuals with promise show less egoistic lying behavior than those without. The interaction between self-control depletion and promise was not significant in altruistic lying behavior. Therefore, promise can mitigate the effect of self-control depletion on egoistic lying behavior.Egoistic lying and altruistic lying behave differently under promise and self-control depletion.
