| Reading is an important way for people to get information and acquire language knowledge.The National English Curriculum for Common Senior Middle schools(2017 Edition)reconfirmed the significant role of reading as one of the five basic skills of language learning.Therefore,English teaching should be put lots of emphasis on the development of students’ reading ability.The National English Curriculum for Common Senior Middle schools(2017Edition)pointed out that activity is the basic form of English teaching,and it’s also the vital way to change English teaching.Moreover,the emergence of the view of activity-based English learning put a lot of emphasis on the significant role of activity in English teaching and learning.In order to effectively develop students’ reading ability,teachers need to carry out a series of classroom activities when teaching English reading.The design of these activities inevitably involves the engagement of modern information technology to comprehensively take advantage of various modes,such as videos,audios,pictures,body movements,etc.to stimulate students’ multiple sensory organs and motivate students’ learning interest so as to improve the effect of reading teaching and promote the development of students’ reading ability.This teaching method that uses various modes to stimulate students’ multiple sensory organs and mobilize their learning initiative,and then improve teaching efficiency is the Multimodal Teaching proposed by Stein in 2000.In view of the importance of activity in English reading classes and the multimodal teaching resources provided by the development of modern information technology,a great number of scholarsabroad and at home have conducted a lot of studies on reading activities and Multimodal Teaching respectively in recent years.Nevertheless,limited researches have been carried out to study reading activities on the basis of Multimodal Teaching.Therefore,this thesis attempts to combine Multimodal Teaching with English reading activities to reflect the current situation,advantages and disadvantages of English reading activities with various modes.Besides,it also aims to figure out some feasible measures to improve English reading teaching in senior high school.The research questions are as follows:(1)What is the current situation of English reading activities on the basis of Multimodal Teaching in senior high school?(2)What are the advantages and disadvantages of English reading activities on the basis of Multimodal Teaching in senior high school?(3)What measures can be taken to deal with the disadvantages?Questionnaire,interview and classroom observation are adopted as research instruments in this study.The research subjects,both teachers and students,are all from XX middle school.There are 12 teachers and 217 students involved in this study,and they are all from senior one and two.The results reflect that about 70% students and teachers maintain positive attitude toward reading activities,especially for the reading activities with various modes.As for the advantage of reading activities with various modes,it is helpful to create relatively authentic and relaxing language learning environment on the one hand.On the other hand,it is also beneficial to promote students’ understanding of the reading passages and some language points.With respect to the disadvantage,it mainly involves the selection of modes,the difficulty of classroom management and the distraction of students’ attention.Based on these disadvantages,there are some corresponding suggestions provided in this thesis so as to improve the effect of English reading teaching and promote the development of students’ reading ability. |
