According to English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)issued by the Ministry of Education and the demands of the college entrance examination,the concrete goal of English teaching in senior high school is to cultivate and develop students' core competencies of English subject.English reading,as an important carrier of course contents and the main way to acquire the comprehensive language input,plays an indispensable role in English learning.However,in the practical English reading teaching,students' independent reading ability cannot be improved and core competencies of the course cannot be comprehensively developed for lack of the cultivation of reading interest and the guidance of reading skills and reading strategies.Therefore,this study took Schema Theory and Knowledge Visualization as the theoretical basis and Mind Map as a teaching aid for developing core competencies of English subject.In this thesis,the following three questions would be discussed.(1)Can the application of Mind Map help to stimulate students' interest in English reading?(2)Is the application of Mind Map helpful to the training of students' reading strategies and the improvement of their English reading efficiency and comprehensive practical ability?(3)Can the application of Mind Map help to improve students' performance in English reading comprehension?The teaching experiment was conducted in two parallel classes of Senior One in Fuzhou Overseas Chinese Middle School and lasted about 16 weeks.Class One was the experimental class which was taught by the application of Mind Map and Class Two was the controlled class which was taught with the traditional reading teaching method.The changes of the students' interest in English reading and reading strategies and so on before and after the experiment are tested by the questionnaire survey.The data of the reading tests before and after the experiments were collected and analyzed with independent-samples T test and paired-samples T test by SPSS 13 to explore the changes of students' performance in English reading comprehension.The experimental resultsshow that the application of Mind Map is helpful to the training of students' reading strategies and the improvement of their English reading efficiency and comprehensive ability.It turns out that this study is helpful to the teaching of reading in senior high schools.Therefore,this study is of some significance both theoretically and practically.The author hopes that this thesis will provide some reference for senior high school teachers in English reading teaching.
