On English Translation Of Ashima From The Perspective Of Translation Ethics

Under the background of translation ethical turn and the marginalization of minority classics,this thesis takes Chesterman's five ethical models as theoretical basis.By using qualitative research,it explores the English version of Ashima by Gladys Yang in 1981.Since An Ethics of Commitment is the glue and supplement of the other four ethics,two research questions in this thesis are:(1)In the English translation of Ashima,how does Gladys Yang show her adherence to Representation Ethics,Ethics of Service,Ethics of Communication,and Norm-based Ethics?(2)In the English translation of Ashima,how does Gladys Yang deal with the special relation between An Ethics of Commitment and the above four ethical models?This study finds that:(1)In the English translation of Ashima,Gladys Yang's adherence to Representation Ethics is illustrated by the representation of the original content,the original author's purpose and the original culture.Her adherence to Ethics of Service is illustrated by her service to target readers and her invisibility in translation.Her adherence to Ethics of Communication is illustrated by her care to cultural communication and target readers' understanding in the aspect of linguistics,literature and culture.Her adherence to Norm-based Ethics is illustrated by the norm-based translation of form,rhyme,moral and convention.(2)When translating Ashima into English,Gladys Yang flexibly abides by the above four ethics,so as to make the translation process "striving for excellence".That is to say,An Ethics of Commitment guides Gladys Yang to make choices between the other four ethics.This thesis also puts forward the four suggestions for translators engaged in the translation of minority classics:(1)Selecting authoritative original texts in a prudent manner.(2)Respecting the special culture of minorities.(3)Paying attention to the translation requirements with current age and national development.(4)Adhering to An Ethics of Commitment and always striving for excellence in translation.
