A Study On The English Translation Of The Governance Of China From The Perspective Of Translation Ethics

With the rising of China,it is of great significance to shape the image of the country and government through translation,bringing China's voice into international community.In this process of cross-cultural communication,ethical issues are often involved.Hence it is necessary to utilize translation ethics to guide political literature translation.The second volume of The Governance of China is a representative of political documents,which not only spreads China's voice to the world,but also promotes Chinese culture.Therefore,this paper takes the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics as examples,aiming to answer two questions:1.Does the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics reflect translation ethics models?2.What choices does the translator prefer when faced with different translation ethics models?This thesis takes Andrew Chesterman's five major translation ethics models(ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication,ethics of commitment and norm-based ethics)as framework,and selects the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics in The Governance of China.The author classifies the expressions into four categories(classical poetry,proverbs,policy terms,and four-character idioms)in order to analyzes them from the perspective of translation ethics.Through case analysis,the thesis draws the following conclusions:Chesterman's five ethical models are reflected in different texts,but each has its own emphasis.The translator tries to achieve the best balance between the four values(clarity,understanding,truth and trust).Different from the rigid impression on political documents,when conflicts arise between different ethical models,translators are more inclined to choose the ethics of service and communication rather than pure "truth".In addition,the translator is more likely to choose flexible translation strategies so as to faithfully convey the political meaning of the original text.
