As we all know,English vocabulary is a part of English language learning,which affects students’ enthusiasm for English learning.How to effectively remember vocabulary is a common problem faced by primary school students in the process of English learning.In the context of the new curriculum,how to improve the ability of primary school students to use English vocabulary based on the current situation of teaching has become an important part of current teaching research.Mind map is a visual graphical instrument that can effectively promote students’ divergent thinking and thus can activate students’ memory potential.This study attempts to understand whether mind map can improve pupils’ English vocabulary overall ability.The author selected 100 students from Class(1)and Class(2)Grade5 of Huanhu Primary School in Guilin as the research subjects,and conducted a five-month experimental study.The research mainly used tests and interviews as research instruments to try to answer three questions:(1)Can mind map improve pupils’ English vocabulary level ?(2)What is the effect of mind map on improving the vocabulary level of students at different levels?(3)What are the problems in English vocabulary teaching with mind map ?After collecting,dealing with the numbers and analyzing the data,the study found that:(1)Mind map is conducive to improving pupils’ overall ability of English vocabulary learning.Students make significant improvements in memorizing words.But when it comes to the usage of words in context,the improvement is not sosignificant.(2)Mind map is conducive to improving the English vocabulary level of students at different levels,especially students of low vocabulary level.(3)As for mind map in English vocabulary teaching,there are still some inadequacies such as inadequate teaching aid facilities,insufficient teacher experience,and it takes long time for students to draw mind maps.Mind map,as a vocabulary learning strategy,can effectively help students to conceive vocabulary ideas and support,and improve students’ vocabulary ability.Therefore,in the English vocabulary teaching of primary schools,it is necessary to improve the professional quality of teachers,construct a mind-guided teaching mode,promote the development of students’ personality,pay attention to vocabulary learning strategies,and enrich teaching resources.
