A Report On Target Journal-oriented Translation Of Medical Papers

Medical texts have unique stylistic features and need to conform to particular translation criteria.The translation must be clear,accurate,and concise.Based on her translation practice in a medical translation company,the author summarizes and concludes the difficulties encountered and translation methods adopted in the translation process that are oriented by the target journals.In detail,the report first introduces the background of selecting the translation material and the translation process;then analyze the stylistic features of medical English and the main features of the target journal,as well as the main difficulties encountered in the translation process and corresponding solutions.In the end,the report selects some typical cases to summarize and analyze the practical methods the author applied from the three aspects: textual,sentence and lexical level.The translation methods on textual level are analyzed from title,abstract,method part and result part of the text: omitting redundancy,emphasizing the mechanism and verification from authority are adopted in translating title;four-step method of background,methods,results and conclusions,edited translation and amplification are employed in translating abstract;selective translation and edited translation are applied in translating method part of the text;result subtitle summarization method,three-step method of background,result and conclusion and edited translation of schematic diagram are mainly adopted in result part of the text.The translation skills on sentence level are discussed from how to translate long and difficult sentences and how to deal with the voices in the source text: the methods of clarifying logic,chunking and adding conjunctions are adopted in translating long and difficult sentences;the method of voice conversion are used in dealing with voice.As for the translation methods on lexical level,the translation of medical terms and medical verbs are explored: the method of using specialized vocabulary and verification from authority are primarily employed in translating medical terms;the method of part-of-speech conversion and verification from authority are mainly used in translating medical verbs.The translation methods summarized and concluded in this report oriented by the target journals,which have a strong pertinence for the translation of medical papers,provide some references for the translation and teaching of medical texts.
