A Report On News Translation Practice Based On An American Adviser's Proofreading

C-E news translation,as a type of external publicity translation,is an indispensable media for information delivery and culture promotion.As a vital channel of external exchanges and a main window of international publicity,the Official Website of the People's Government of Hunan Province aims to promote Hunan to the outside world via C-E news translation.Sources selected here are all Hunan local news translated by the author during her internship at the Website.Examples listed in this report and the news texts in Appendix C are all initially translated by the author,then reviewed and revised by experienced Website translators,and finally proofread by an American adviser.Based on the American adviser's proofreading,the author analyzes and concludes the methods for translating news headlines,long sentences and titles.Literal translation is usually adopted by the author.But under the guidance of the American adviser,more suitable translation methods are adopted so as to better meet the reading needs of native English readers.As for news headlines translation,active voice is more commonly utilized in Chinese headlines translation compared with passive voice;inductive method and omission are mainly utilized.While translating long sentences in news,except for the splitting method,‘bullet' or number list method is a rare but effective translation method.While translating titles,sequencing is avoided.Rather,separation and postpositioning is utilized.Moreover,separation and postpositioning combined with ‘bullet' list method can also be a good choice.This report generalizes the methods for translating news headlines,long sentences and titles from the perspective of the American adviser's proofreading,which is,to some extent,original.Author hopes it can be of some use for C-E news translation,and better promote Hunan and make Hunan 'Go Global'.
