This thesis is a report on translation of Chapter 6-7 of The Atlantic Migration: 1607-1860 written by Marcus Lee Hansen(1892-1938),a famous American historian. The excerpt illustrates that influenced by various social and economic factors,European people migrated to America by various methods from colonial time to American civil war.Based on the analysis of text features, groups of readers and intention of the writer, the author puts forward corresponding methods from lexical, syntactic level and textual style under the guidance of the communicative translation. At lexical level, the author literally translates the religious organizations and adds explanations to the geographic terms conforming to the requirements of the communicative translation to be more direct and clearer. At syntactic level, the author divides the long sentences and converts the impersonal subjects into personal subjects according to the requests of the communicative translation to be simpler and smoother. At textual style, the author deletes and restructures the personifications and idiomatically translates the common expressions complying with the expectation of communicative translation of transferring foreign elements into target culture to make a better text. This report summarizes and classifies difficulties in the translation process and proposes corresponding strategies from the perspective of communicative translation so as to enhance translation quality, accumulate translation experience, lay a good translation foundation and furnish suggestions for similar practices in the future.
