The thesis is composed of three parts: source text, target text and translation report. The source text, containing over 12,000 words,is selected from Chapter II of Storm of the Sea: Indians and Empires in the Atlantic’s Age of Sail. It’s the latest work of Matthew R.Bahar,an American historical professor and a publication of Oxford University Press. As no Chinese version of the book has been found, the originality of the translation can be assured. In the book, the author chronically narrates the key events and occurrences related to the Atlantic in North American.Beginning with encounter between European explorers and Indian natives, the author described Indian’s pursuit of European sail technology and the consequences after the natives’ successful access to these ships and technologies.Transoceanic sails and ships influenced almost every aspect of Indian communities, from economical activities, social and political structures to diplomatic policies. The selected chapter presents Indians’ violence against European visitors on the sea and other terrestrial communities to hunt for treasures, ships and captives. On basis of style and linguistic features of the source text, the translator adopts Hu Gengsheng’s Three-dimension Perspectives of Eco-translation as the theoretical guidance for the translation.Under the paradigm of Eco-translation,translation is an effort to transplant the text from environment of the source language to that of the target language and to assure its survival. The Three-dimension Perspectives refer to the translators’ strategies to adopt transformation from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. The translators should probe into the eco-environment of the source text and the differences between the source and target language. It should be ensured that linguistic forms are correct and appropriate, cultural connotations behind languages are transmitted and communicative intentions are fulfilled.Based on the translation practice of historical texts,it is realized that appropriate translational techniques should be deployed in accordance with the linguistic and stylistic features of the source text.Except for the fact that accuracy and readability of the target text need to be assured, cultural connotation embodied in the source text can be transmitted and the author’s communicative goal can be accomplished. |
