A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of China Has Entered The Center Of The World Stage (Chapters One To Ten)

This is a Chinese-English translation practice report.The source text is selected from a political monograph about “China and the world”,China Has Entered the Center of the World Stage,which is written by professor Hu Angang,a leading figure in the study of China's national conditions.This book mainly introduces China's achievements since the founding of People's Republic of China and its evolving role on the world stage.The translation of original text is conducive to readers' understanding to China's development and political ideas,and the presentation of China's image to the world.By translating chapters one to ten of the monograph,the author of this report writes the practice report.Based on the introduction of the background,significance and the structure of the project and the translation process,this translation report focuses on the analysis of the translation difficulties and corresponding translation approaches.The translation difficulties mainly lie in three aspects,the lexical,syntactical and discoursal levels.At the lexical level,the author of this report adopts the approach of literal translation to translate words with Chinese characteristics,which remains the characteristics of the source text better.In terms of translation of idioms,free translation is adopted to accurately express the original meaning of the source text.As for the repeated words,the approach of omission is used properly.At the syntactic level,for the translation of some complex sentences,reorganizing the sentence structure is adopted to conform to the expression habits of English.For some Chinese sentences without subject,due to the differences between Chinese and English,the approach of amplification is adopted.In the translation of verses and proverbs,annotation is used to make the translated text understandable.At the discoursal level,division and synthesization are adopted to solve the translation difficulties of cohesion and coherence.Finally,the author of this report makes a summary to this translation project,puts forward the limitations and gives some suggestions for future study and political text translation.Through writing this translation report,the author of this report finds that before starting translation,the translator should analyze the type of the source text and find out proper translation approaches.Besides,in the translation of political text,for some words with Chinese characteristics and idioms,the translator should find out the most reliable material,in order to make sure the accuracy of translated text.Furthermore,this translation report is helpful to readers to further understand China's diplomatic policies and development ideas,and give a reference to the translation of the same type in the future.
