"Tragedy" In Mahler’s Music

First of all,through collecting and consulting the current academic research results on Mahler and his works,and from the perspective of "tragic feelings",this paper discusses the tragic expression of Mahler in vocal music and instrumental music works,in order to highlight Mahler’s preference for tragic themes,as well as the artistic conception,expression demands and specific expression ways of tragic performance.Secondly,it traces the origin of Mahler’s tragic sentiment from the following aspects:the tragic life course of the composer,the mood at the end of the century,anti Semitism,the connotation of death(the "motif of death" in the West),the influence of philosophy and religion,so as to clarify the origin of Mahler’s tragic sentiment in his works and its profound influence on Mahler’s music creation.Finally,through the analysis of the music text of Symphony No.6,this paper makes a further interpretation of Mahler’s "tragic" performance in terms of genre form,artistic style and emotional connotation,so as to have a deeper understanding of the artistic charm and cultural character of the German Austrian music culture at the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century.
