Geographical cognition is the active reflection of the subject on the geographical environment on the basis of practice. The discussion of Sven Hedin's understanding of Xinjiang's geography is a need for the study of the history of geography, and it can also facilitate the study of the history of exploration in Central Asia and the history of Xinjiang's knowledge. All cognition cannot be created out of thin air,so before discussing the content of cognition, the basis of cognition should be discussed first. As an explorer with a background in geography,Sven Hedin's investigation and understanding of Xinjiang was directly based on the previous development of vertical and horizontal geography in Europe. In addition, coupled with Hedin's own experience and training, this explorer has formed the basis of understanding Central Asia and Xinjiang.Based on the above,Sven Hedin carried out five inspections of Xinjiang. After these five inspections,Sven Hedin's knowledge of Xinjiang's geography was faithfully reflected in his investigations. These cognitions can be summarized into two aspects: physical geography and human geography. The understanding of physical geography mainly includes the knowledge of glaciers, deserts, rivers, etc.,and the recognition of human geography mainly includes the knowledge of peoples, settlements, and population. After determining the specific content of these cognitions,it is natural to summarize the characteristics of these cognitions, and then restore these cognitions to the coordinates of the history of geography for evaluation.Sven Hedin's characteristics of Xinjiang's geographical cognition can be summarized into four aspects: first, his overall understanding is quite comprehensive;second, his overall understanding is more focused on natural geography;Thirdly,as far as single knowledge is concerned,it is often supported by measured data.Fourthly, single knowledge is often more accurate.According to the current standards of geography,Hedin's understanding is correct and wrong. But whether it is correct or not,its understanding occupies a certain position in the history of geography.
