| Since Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012,his works and its translations in various languages attract the attention of the readers all over the world,and scholars at home and abroad begin to actively explore and analyze Mo Yan and his works,which is of great significance to the dissemination and development of Chinese literature.Mo Yan has described a society with national and local characteristics in his famous work Big Breasts and Wide Hips,and created a solemn and stirring female character named Shangguan Lu,who is also the protagonist of this work,therefore,it is of great significance to compare Goldblatt'sEnglish version with Mo Yan's original work,and analyze the reconstruction of discourse system and literary images in Big Breasts and Wide Hips by Goldblatt.The previous studies on the translation of Mo Yan's works mainly focus on translation strategies and effects,translation thoughts and overseas dissemination,but most studies lack specific data analysis.Thus,from the perspective of interpersonal function,this thesis studies the relevant discourse system of Shangguan Lu in Big Breasts and Wide Hips,and provides factual statistic results combined with corpus.Interpersonal function is an important part in Halliday's Systemic-Functional Grammar.It is the language function that people use to express identity,status,attitude,motivation,inference,judgment and evaluation in oral communication and written text.According to Halliday,interpersonal function is mainly embodied by mood system,modality system,personal pronouns,address terms,intonation system and appraisal system.Focusing on the systems of mood,modality,personal pronouns,address terms and based on the corpus,this thesis explores and analyzes Shangguan Lu's relevant dialogues in the Chinese and English version of Big Breasts and Wide Hips,and studies how Goldblatt achieves interpersonal meaning in his translation.Secondly,this thesis compares the similarities and differences between the two versions in the construction of the female character Shangguan Lu.Finally,combined with Skopos Theory and cultural differences between China and English speaking countries,this thesis analyzes the deep reasons behind the results,interpreting the Goldblatt's intention to make adjustments.Through the contrastive analysis of the corpus,this research finds that: there are differences between the Chinese and English versions in all systems mentioned above: the number of clauses and address terms decreases,the number of modal auxiliaries and personal pronouns increases significantly in the English version;in addition,the communication environment is more friendly,the attitude of both sides of communication is more moderate,and power and status tend to be more equal in the English version.After in-depth analysis,this research finds that,under the premise of following the three principles of Skopos theory,Goldblatt makes appropriate adjustments in the translation process,which ensures the acceptability and readability of the translation,eliminates the obstacles brought by the cultural differences between China and Western countries,ensures the consistency between the interlingual coherence and the communication situation of the target language receiver,and enables the readers to understand the cultural connotation of the original more accurately.This research compares the similarities and differences of the two versions in the construction of female discourse system,and the exploration of Goldblatt's recreation of female images is very important to future translators.Besides,this study interprets the differences in the two versions in the light of Spokos theory and cultural background,and explains the translator's intention and its profound connotation so as to promote readers' understanding of Mo Yan's literary works.Finally,the analysis of the interpersonal meaning in literary works has some enlightenment for the practical application of linguistic theories. |
