The English version of "Big Breasts And Wide Hips" is famous both at home and abroad. As one of the most representative translations of Goldblatt, its research value should not be underestimated. Most scholars at home and abroad focus on Goldblatt's translation thoughts and skills. No one studies Goldblatt's translation process as a complete rhetorical activity from the perspective of rhetorical situation.Mo Yan's masterpiece"Big Breasts And Wide Hips" depicts the rise and fall of Shangguan,a great feudal family, from the Anti-Japanese War to the reform and opening up.The novel contains numerous expressions of Chinese characteristics, which enriches the language and enhances the literature value of this work, but also increases the difficulty to translate it into English.Guided by "rhetorical situation" of western rhetoric theory, this article explores how the English version of "Big Breasts And Wide Hips" can fill up the "exigency",win the" audience" and overcome the "rhetorical limitations" so as to make the translation widely accepted by the target audience. Finally, the author drew the following conclusions:1.Because of the wide differences of Chinese and Western culture and ideology, there is a specific "rhetorical situation" when translating Chinese cultural works into English.Adapting to the "rhetorical situation" is important for English version that is widely accepted by the western audience.2.Goldblatt analyzed the "rhetorical situation" from multi-dimension by focusing on the target audience when translating. This makes the English version more closely match the target audience's aesthetic standards and reading preferences.3.In order to comply with "rhetorical situation",the translation is often not exactly same with the original text. The translator needs to make appropriate adjustments in the content and structure which makes the translation more convinced.
