With the rapid development of science and technology, multimodality plays an important role in the process of information transmission and expression.Researches conducted on multimodality and multimodality discourse are done in a gradual process. In the late 1970s,some western researchers began to study multimodality discourse, laying the main theoretical foundation for multimodality discourse theory.Since the 1990s,Kress and Van Leeuwen have tried to study non-linguistic modal symbols on the basis of Systemic-functional Grammar, and established the framework for the multimodality discourse analysis in images. Then, the application of multimodality discourse in teaching has attracted more and more attention from scholars at home and abroad in recent years.Based on the multimodality discourse theory,Systemic-functional Grammar, and Visual Grammar, the author takes two first-prize teaching videos of the 11~thh National Competition of High-Quality English Classes of Junior High Schools as the research subjects, and makes use of observation, comparative analysis and video annotation software,ELAN,to make a comprehensive multimodality discourse analysis, aiming to find out what modalities are employed by the teachers in high-quality English classes, how these modalities make different meanings and what shortcomings there are in the application of multimodality in teaching. At the same time, the author hopes that the study can clarify the role of multimodality discourse in English classroom teaching so as to arouse English teachers'attention to improving English teaching effect through the application of multimodality in the new era,and that this study can provide reference for the English classroom teaching.Through data collection and analysis, some conclusions can be drawn:firstly, the teachers in high-quality English classes use environment, behavior, auditory and visual modalities to convey teaching information through language and non-language symbols;secondly, the application of multimodality where oral language is used as the main mode and different non-language symbols serves as the assistant constructs ideational and representative meaning, interpersonal and interactive meaning, and textual and compositional meaning;thirdly, there are some deficiencies in the use of multimodality, which will have a negative influence on the English classroom teaching. For example,over-reliance on a certain modality may distract students from learning.
