Over the past decade,the application of e-boards and multimedia programs in classes has enabled a new mainstream way of teaching,a teaching style by means of language,images and sounds at the same time.Thus,teachers have to deal with certain new problems in their classes,i.e.suitable methods adopted in the teaching process.It poses new challenges for teachers and students who use these teaching materials.Therefore,an in-depth analysis of multiple modes in Senior High School English textbooks is needed to find new sparks and strategies for future teaching.This paper discusses the following questions:(1)What multimodalities can be found in PEP Senior high school English textbooks?(2)How to capitalize on the multimodal features found in textbooks while teaching?(3)How effective are these teaching strategies?The research takes image and video resources found in the textbooks as research subjects,and further extraction,generalization and statistical analyses will be conducted.Then based on previous research,systematic classification and summarization will be done according to genres,ways of presenting and narrative perspectives of the subjects to devise targeted teaching strategies.Finally,teaching strategies will be applied in English teaching to investigate their effectiveness.The results show that,firstly,NSEFC 2019 made a quantum leap in video modes.The study also found that NSEFC 2019 made a quantum leap in video modes.Compared with NSEFC 2004,NSEFC 2019 better reflects multimodal development trends.Secondly,further analysis of the image modes reveals that the number of Chinese elements and fine traditional Chinese cultural themes in the textbooks has increased significantly and compositional meaning can now be found in the category of meaning types in NSEFC 2019.Thirdly,through the study of chapter four and chapter five,it can be found that the NSEFC 2019 inherited and developed the NSEFC 2004.Since there is a lot of general similarities between NSEFC 2019 and NSEFC 2004,the NSEFC 2004 analysis is still relevant,even though it is no longer in use.When reflected in textbooks,it promotes social interaction and cultural exchanges.This will help students better understand the textbook and consolidates Chinese cultural roots.In English teaching,three strategies can be adopted.First,teachers should use multimodal approaches in textbooks to emphasize Chinese cultural elements before the class.Second,teachers should play the leading role in classes,which will help students understand multimodal teaching materials and fine traditional Chinese culture.Third,during the postteaching period,teachers should let students take the initiative.Teachers should help students understand textbooks and cultural elements during the lesson.After the class,teachers should guide students to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture again.This is done by showing more relevant knowledge about what have been taught in class.In addition,they tell the Chinese story in English better.Finally,through the interview,it was found that teaching strategies have played a positive role in students’ learning.It can alleviate the current teaching dilemma to a certain extent.
