| This translation report analyzes the Chinese-English translation of Salary Guide under the guidance of Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation.Salary Guide was compiled by Career International in the end of 2016 and published in 2017,introducing salary trends in all walks of life and regions.During the Chinese-English translation of Salary Guide, the translator has analyzed the material at lexical and syntactic level, and applied a variety of translation techniques accordingly. In semantic translation, verbatim and zero translation have been used in words with Chinese characteristics and terms at lexical level, and maintaining the syntactic structure of the original has been applied at syntactic level;in communicative translation, addition and omission have been applied at lexical level, and division and combination and voice conversion have been used at syntactic level. The report consists of five major parts: The first chapter includes project introduction, background and significance;the second chapter makes an introduction to the process and schedule of the project;the third chapter is pre-translation preparation, language characteristics of the original and translation difficulties;the fourth chapter is formed by theories introduction and case analysis;the last chapter is the conclusion. The report has found that semantic translation is basically applied at lexical level for report text type most of the time and emphasizes the reproduction of semantic and syntactic structure of the original, but communicative translation is more used at syntactic level and focuses on information and effect to the reader.Although there have different preferences in application of semantic translation and communicative translation in practice, translators need to balance them in a translation according to different text types and specific context of the original. |
