A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Importing Into The U.S.(Excerpts)

As one of the China's most important export markets,the United States has always played a vital role in trade.The enormous economic effect from the bilateral trade benefits both countries.However,the trade between the two countries has been constantly conflicting.With the start of the trade war between China and the United States,which has also attracted the attention internationally,it is more significant for Chinese exporters to obtain the information of the U.S.customs regulations.Yet,there is no such basic guidance document in China.The translation of the original text can provide some help to Chinese exporters.The translation report is based on the translation of the legal document,Importing into the U.S.,which is revised in 2006 and issued by the U.S.Customs and Border Protection Agency.The original document is an official government document containing the import regulations.It is an informative text with legal texts' characteristics.Under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,this report summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation process and the solutions to these difficulties.The translation and the report will provide a reference for the future translation of such texts.In the translation practice,the translator used Functional Equivalence Theory as theoretical basis,and comprehensively took the acceptability of target language readers,the strictness of the original text,the information completeness and readability of the translation into consideration,to flexibly handle the translation of words and sentences.When translating words,the translator mainly consulted the related dictionaries and documents as reference to achieve lexical equivalence as far as possible.In sentence translation,the translator did not stick to the original sentence form and structure,but adopted inversion,division,linear translation and other translation techniques to make the translation smoother and more professional.Through the comparison between the source text(ST)and the translation text(TT),the translator discussed the specific translation strategies and skills when translating in this translation report.
