Chinese classics contain rich cultural and historical information and display the cultural development of China for thousands of years.Casual Expressions of Idle Feeling(Xian Qing Ou Ji)is the brilliant treasure of Chinese classics.How to effectively and accurately convey the profound cultural connotation contained in this book to the target readers to help them better understand and accept Chinese culture is of great significance to the dissemination of Chinese culture.Under the guidance of cultural context theory,this thesis adopts the qualitative methods and case analysis to explore the translation methods applied in translating culture-loaded words in Casual Expressions of Idle Feeling.The thesis adopts three various forms of thick translation,namely,illustrations,notes and additions to provide further information to help target readers better understand the source text and appreciate Chinese culture.It also adopts literal translation and free translation to accurately convey the cultural connotation and alleviate the target readers’ burden.Major findings of this thesis are listed as below: firstly,the selection of translation methods to translate Chinese culture-loaded words should be based on the original context.Secondly,thick translation can effectively be applied in translating Chinese classics,especially in the translation of culture-loaded words.It has been proved that thick translation is the most suitable translation strategy which can deeply excavate the cultural connotation and achieve the equivalence of cultural context between the source language and the target language.Thirdly,cultural context theory has a strong explanatory power for the interpretation of Chinese classics. |
