A Translation Report On Casual Expressions Of Idle Feeling(Excerpts)

This thesis is a translation report on an excerpt from Casual Expressions of Idle Feeling, a book written by Li Yu(1610–1680AD), which mainly presents the civilized living and worldly customs of Chinese people in the 17 th century. Taking the culture-loaded terms as the main theme, the translator tries to analyze translation version respectively from the perspective of Kwame Anthony Appiah‘s Thick Translation in terms of Cultural Context.This translation report consists of four parts. Chapter one is the task description, which includes a brief introduction to the author and the book, the source text and the analysis of it, as well as the publisher‘s requirements and quality control. Chapter Two firstly introduces the process of translating, consisting of the preparation before the translation, the tools used during the translation and the modification after the translation. Then, it makes a brief review of the translation theories adopted in this report, including Cultural Context Equivalence and Thick Translation. Chapter Three is case study, which is the main body of the report. The translation analysis is further divided into three parts: theory application, translation difficulties and solutions, and methods and skills that used in the translation, including transliteration, literal translation, free translation, annotation etc. Chapter Four not only summarizes the experiences, implication and lessons learned during the process of translation, but also points out the unsolved problems. Book translation is a long and arduous task that requires patience and perseverance. Although it is difficult, the translator would also try her best to approach the perfection.
