A Report On The C-E Translation Of Pioneers In The Zhong Guan Cen(Chapters 16,17,and 18) From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

This is a Chinese-English translation practice report.The source text is selected from the modern author Ken Ning's Pioneers in the Zhongguan Cun.On the basis of field research and in-depth thinking,Pioneers in the Zhongguan Cun describes the great figures of Zhongguan Cun at its different stages.These pioneers dared to break through the old system and dared to innovate during the forty years of reform and opening-up.The report plans to analyze the characteristics of the source text under the guidance of Katharina Reiss' s text typology theory,and analyze the application of literal translation,explanatory translation,adaptation,conversion and so on in translation practice.Text typology theory was put forward by Reiss,the famous representative personage of German school of functionalist translation.Reiss holds that the classifications of text type should base on the text functions.Reiss divides all of text types into three types: informative type,expressive type,and operative type.Informative type is to convey information,phenomena,and facts,etc.Its language is logical and the focus is content,not form.Therefore,the translator needs to use plain and simple language to convey the ideas.To some extent,expressive type shows reads some feelings of the author.Its language is aesthetic.The translator needs to use identifying method to transmit aesthetic form.Operative type is to make an appeal to the target readers.The translator needs to use adaptive method to gat an equivalent effect.To be more specific,the report is made up of five parts.In the first part,the translator mainly discussed the background,significance,and structure of the report.The second part is the translation process which is composed of three sections: preparation before translation,the production of translation,and post translation.And the part "preparation before translation" is composed of two parts: the analysis of the source text,and the theoretical basis which is text typology theory.The third part analyzes the difficulties of the translation in the perspectives of lexical level and syntactic level.The difficulties at the lexical level is composed of expressions with Chinese culture,translation of technical terms,and translation of four-character phrases.The difficulties at the syntactic level is composed of zero-subject sentences,and long and complex sentences.The fourth part is about the translation methods to deal with the translation difficulties.The translation methods are: literal translation,explanatory translation,adaptation,adding subjects,conversion,and comprehensive methods.And the last part is conclusion.The report shows that it's necessary to analyse the text type of the source text.After the consideration,the translator can know the features of source text better and then choose appropriate translation methods.This report shows that the text typology theory of Reiss,especially the informative text type provides a theoretical basis for the translation practice.
