A Report On English Translation Of Folding Fans–the Last Natural Descendant Of Nvshu

This is a report on the translation of Folding Fans—the Last Natural Descendant of Nvshu,a significant work concerning Nvshu culture written by Tang Zhaohui.After interview investigation,searching for resources and consideration and creation,the author described every corner of Nvshu culture by the writing technique of poetic prose.Relevant words of the culture and Nvshu song are difficult to address,and the multi-occurring run-on sentences are presented in the form of scattered sentences and in the form of combination of the void and the solid,therefore,many troubles are posed in processing.Based on formal system of aesthetic object in translation aesthetics,these difficulties encountered are reduced into lexical difficulties and syntactic difficulties,and the translation of Nvshu songs are discussed separately.To solve these difficulties and represent the original beauty,imitation is adopted.According to Liu Miqing,there are three categories of imitation: SL-oriented imitation,TL-oriented imitation and dynamic imitation.Difficulties of lexis are handled by SL-oriented imitation and they are analyzed from two aspects.Culture-loaded words are handled by the method of transliteration plus footnotes to remain the source flavor while the descriptive words should be appropriate,beautiful and compact to reoccur the original features.The difficulties of syntax are addressed by TL-oriented imitation.Chinese run-on sentences are reconstructed into logical English sentences,and due to the difference between Chinese and English syntax,the logic relation is focused on the process of C-E translation.Translating Nvshu songs is processed by dynamic imitation,and it focuses on the analysis of inner logic and maintaining the original feature and cultural connotation.
