A Study Of Metaphor Translation In The English Translation Of Folding Beijing From The Perspective Of Cognitive Translation

With the increasingly close global cultural exchanges,it is an inevitable trend for China’s excellent literary translation to “go global.” Metaphor is an essential method in translating Chinese literature,which plays a vital role in constructing readability.In recent years,more and more scholars have paid attention to the study of metaphor translation,but most of the existing studies focus on the classification of metaphor,and few on the translation strategies and effects of metaphor.Based on the cognitive translation theory proposed by Wang Yin,this study takes Hugo prize-winning literary work Folding Beijing and its English version translated by Ken Liu as an example,which analyzes the characteristics of metaphor from the perspective of lexical to syntax,from the micro to macro perspective,and metaphor translation strategies in Folding Beijing with the methods of mapping and construal.It also analyzes metaphor translation from the perspective of the five translation principles of cognitive translation proposed by Wang Yin.This study aims to highlight the guiding significance of cognitive translation in metaphor translation studies and explore the influence of metaphor translation in Folding Beijing on the translation to better understand the core ideas and expression effects of metaphor translation in Folding Beijing.The findings are as follows:(1)Metaphor translation in the translation of Folding Beijing has the features of nominalization,verbalization and other parts of speech,showing the characteristics of contradiction and unity,innovation and openness in sentences.(2)From the perspective of mapping and construal methods,Ken Liu’s metaphor translation strategies realize the combination of cognitive subject and real-world experience,retain the rhetorical devices of metaphor in translation,and present the characteristics of metaphor.(3)From the perspective of the five translation principles of cognitive translation,Ken Liu’s translation of metaphor adds sensibility,interaction,innovation,discourse,and harmony to the translation of Folding Beijing.To sum up,this study analyzes the application of metaphor translation in Folding Beijing from the perspective of cognitive translation.It highlights the guiding significance of cognitive translation to metaphor translation,which provides essential thinking for further study of metaphor translation.
