Guo Kui styled himself Zhongtong.His ancestral home is Julu,Hebei Province.At the beginning of the Song Dynasty,his ancestors moved to the capital and then buried in Luoyang,where the Guo family settled.Guo Kui was born in the first year of Qianxing of emperor Renzong of Song Dynasty(1022 A.D.),and died in the third year of Yuanyou of emperor Zhezong of Song Dynasty(1088 A.D.)and Guo Kui had experienced the four reigns of emperor Renzong,Emperor Yingzong,Emperor Shenzong and Emperor Zhezong of Song Dynasty.During this period,he took the position gradually from the lower military officer to the Privy Council and managed four administrative divisions of Shanxi.He lived in a time of internal and external troubles.As a military general,Guo Kui had many achievements in his life.At first,he had been startling well in the mutiny of pacifying and insurrecting Baozhou,and then pacifying Pengshixi rebellion in Hubei Province,which accelerated the internalization of the border areas.Later,he managed west of Xijiang for emperor Shenzong to save Suizhou City and properly arrange the inner fan-tribe.The fan-tribe ordered to kill royal officials to make a riot.Guo Kui led the army to pacify and build two villages,namely Zhiping and Jichuan,which improved the military defense line in the northwest.In the counterattack against Jiaozhi,Emperor Shenzong of Song Dynasty paid homage to Guo Kui as the general manager of Ma Bu army of Annam road camp,who led 100000 troops to defeat Jiaozhi army in Fuliang River,and forced Li Renzong of Jiaozhi to surrender.Guo Kui,who has experienced hundreds of battles and has greatly consolidated the regime of the Northern Song Dynasty.His military talent had also been tempered in his military career.During his long military career,he also left a wealth of military thoughts and became one of the few famous generals in the history of the Song Dynasty.In the middle and later period of the Northern Song Dynasty,the policy of “advocating literature and restraining military forces” and “controlling military forces with literature” were deepened continuously.While the military pressure was increasing,the position of military generals was declining.The generals were guarded by the ruling group.They had to submit to the civil servants to seek self-protection.Although Guo Kui was appointed to the Privy Council,his actions were suppressed by civil servants in this political atmosphere,which undoubtedly hindered his military ability.Guo Kui's fate is also the epitome of the fate of the group of military generals at the same time.
