This report describes the Chinese translation task of the second chapter of Alchemy: the Dark Arts and Curious Science of Creating Magic in Brands,Business and Life written by Rory Sutherland. In order to solve the translation problems that emerged during this task, different solutions to those problems are discussed in this report under the guidance of Nord’s translation theory—Functionality plus Loyalty. This report mainly describes the translation process of the task, the analysis of the problems and the solving process. After an introduction to the source text and the nature of the task, this report describes the whole task procedure including preparations before translation, translation process and proofreading.Preparations include choosing assistive tools, theoretical thinking, textual analysis and formulation of the task plan. Moreover, translation process describes how the translation and self-revision are done. And proofreading shows how the quality of translation is controlled. Then in case analysis, according to Nord’s theory, the problems are analyzed and divided into four categories: pragmatic problems, intercultural problems,text-specific problems and interlingual problems. Finally,in the summary of the translation task, the whole process is reviewed by the translator and limitations of the process are summarized. It also contains a few thoughts on how to use Nord’s theory to solve translation problems along with a brief discussion about the abilities translators should enhance and the study prospect of advertising texts. In this report, the purposes and functions of both the source text and the target text are analyzed and considered as the main base to solve translation problems.Besides, the report describes the analysis of the problems and discusses appropriate solutions to all of them.More importantly,it shows how translators can apply the theory of functionality plus loyalty to actual translation tasks similar to this one.
