This thesis is a report based on the author’s translation practice of the first nine chapters of The Sea of Tranquility from English to Chinese.In recent years,the demands for foreign children’s books has gradually increased,and the translation of young-adult literature should also be paid attention.The Sea of Tranquility is a young-adult literary work which is written by American writer Katja Millay and describes campus life.The book tells the story about the friendship between a few boys and girls and the story of love through delicate psychological descriptions,rich character dialogues and exciting plots.The first nine chapters in the book The Sea of Tranquility are full of the inner monologues,delicate psychological descriptions and dialogues of the protagonists,which are characterized with rich meanings.The vocabulary of the original text tends to be easy understood.The novel involves a large number of long sentences,compound sentences,and clauses in term of syntax;The author of the book uses a great deal of connectives,pronouns and other cohesive words to make a logically coherent text.In addition,there are plenty of culture-loaded words in the original text.This translation practice is conducted under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory.This report reviews the translation practice and conducts in-depth case studies to explore how to translate such literary works under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence by means of making the target readers have the same reading experience as the original readers through equivalent translation of the source text.The case study of this report is conducted at lexical level,syntactic level,textual level and cultural level.What’s more,this report summarizes the translation strategies,translation methods as well as translation skills that can be used to translate such literary works,hoping to provide experience to those who engage in the translation of young-adult literature.Under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory,the author uses translation methods of free translation,adaptation and literal translation with annotation according to context in terms of translation of words;Translation skills such as omission,amplification,reorganization and free translation method are used to translate sentences ina smoother and more fluent way;the author focuses on the cohesion and coherence within the discourse at the textual level;borrowing and Chinese four-character idioms under the guidance of domestication are used to achieve dynamic equivalence between translation and original text when the culture is considered.
