China was traditionally a male-dominated patriarchal society where female was considered as “the second sex” and the gender discrimination therefore had suppressed the female subjective consciousness. The socio-economic growth since mid-Ming dynasty, reflected through the emerging public class and progressive social value systems had brought changes to the discrimination towards women and can be seen through art and literature.Representing the paintings of Chen Hongshou’s female paintings in the late Ming Dynasty, more and more female paintings have presented the new imagination of the female painters of the Ming Dynasty, from which they can see the profound changes that occurred in the middle and late Ming Dynasty. This paper uses the methods of imagery and art sociology to analyze the re-thinking of women’s destiny in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, and to recognize the female subject’s value, revealing the gradual liberation of women from the "seeing and being seen".These changes can be investigated through visual images and the female imagination has since occured for the first time in the timeline of art history.
