A Practice Report On The Translation Of The 2018 Defense White Paper Of The ROK (Excerpts)

This report is focused on the translation of The 2018 National Defense White Paper of the ROK,with the Functional Equivalence Theory employed to analyze and summarize the translation methods of military texts in Korean.On January 15,2019,the Ministry of National Defense of the ROK officially released The 2018 National Defense White Paper.The 2018 National Defense White Paper is a typical military text featuring timeliness,authoritativeness and formalness.Therefore,the author decided to take it as the translation text.There are seven chapters in the original text.However,due to the length limit,the author selected Chapter three as the translation text of this report.According to Marxist Philosophy,theory is the guide of practice.The Functional Equivalence Theory,put forward by Eugene A.Nida,a famous American translation theorist,has become one of the classical translation theories.Its main theoretical perspective is that translation reformulates the information of the source text from semantics to style in the most appropriate and natural way in the target text.Through translation,the response of the source reader to the source text should be consistent with that of the target reader to the translated text.After careful analysis,the author believed that the principles of the Functional Equivalence Theory were applicable to this translation practice,so decided to choose the Functional Equivalence Theory as translation theory.The report consists of four chapters.Chapter one is the introduction to the research background,the choice of the source text,the purpose and significance of the study.Chapter two is the translation process,including translation preparations and translation practice,translation proofreading.Translation preparations include choosing translation theory and accumulating military knowledge.Chapter three is case analysis,which is the key content of this report.From the perspective of the Functional Equivalence Theory,translation cases are enumerated on the typical military terminology,long attributive sentence,text and style.On this basis,translation methods are analyzed and summarized.Chapter four is a summary of the translation practice.In this chapter,the author summarizes this report and the translation methods of military texts in Korean.The innovation of this report is reflected in the combination of the classical translation theory and the translation practice of typical Korean military text.It is hoped that this report can provide a correct thought for Korean-Chinese translation and research.
