All the Light We Cannot See,Anthony Doerr’s second novel, won the Pulitzer Prize after its publication in 2015 and earned him the fame of one of the most popular novelists in the contemporary America. The novel demonstrates living conditions of ordinary people during the Second World War from the viewpoint of children.None explosive at the battlefield shows the cruelty of the war to its readers. The thesis interprets the interactive relationship between All the Light We Cannot See and history of the Second World War from the perspective of New Historicism. In terms of historicity of text, the novel represents the social life of ordinary people and extreme German Nazism during the Second World War.The novel is a subjective creation based on the fate of nobodies, which depicts another version of the history of the Second World War.Textuality of history is embodied in the novel through the rewriting of gender images and the subversion and containment of marginalized characters. The novel constructs the powerful female image during the war, deconstructs the male-centered discourse, and further subverts the traditional dualistic relationship.Tends to be fruitless and futile, and subversion of nobodies are subject to the dominant ideology and end up with victims to the war.Through the analysis of historicity of text and textuality of history in the novel, the dissertation embodies the interactive relationship between history and literary texts.Interpreting All the Light We Cannot See with New Historicism brings a new angle to the study of the novel.Calling for peace and staying away from war is the idea that Doerr wishes to convey to his readers. It is the lasting theme of the contemporary world.
