Gao Juhan is a world-famous researcher and authority in the history of Western Chinese art.He is also known as "the American who knows Chinese painting best in the 17 th century".He is not only a sinologist,collector,but also an image archivist.His multiple identities make him have a unique perspective and research method in the process of studying Chinese art history.He used the method of "visual proposition" of introversion and extroversion of style,and made a deep and detailed research and exploration of Chinese late painting,and achieved remarkable results.This makes us have a new understanding of the neglected history of late Chinese painting,and also makes western scholars change their prejudice against Chinese art.According to Gao Juhan,Chinese painting can’t be explored in the traditional way of writing research.To explore Chinese art in the Western way of stylistics will discover a new world.Therefore,under the guidance of the artistic concepts of "style is also concept" and "painting can enter history through painting history",Gao Juhan tries to explore the late Chinese painting in the way of internal and external merger research Thus,different kinds of Chinese painting are found.In the new trend of cultural diversity,Gao Juhan’s research method of Chinese art history is worthy of affirmation for us.With the vision and perspective of "the other",he not only explored the content and significance of painting itself,but also explored the social background,times and the status of painters.However,many scholars at home and abroad do not agree with the methods adopted by Gao Juhan for the research of Chinese art history.They think that as a native western scholar,Gao Juhan,without in-depth understanding of the traditional cultural value and knowledge of China,based on Western culture to explore Chinese painting,the conclusion inevitably has a certain "Western centrism" color.But,on the other hand,it can be found that it is precisely because of Gao Juhan’s long-term study of Chinese art history that more people rediscover and understand Chinese art history;it also makes Gao Juhan the most influential in the study of Western Chinese art history The western Chinese art history researchers who produce the most and criticize the most.It is worthy of affirmation and praise for Gao Juhan’s attitude of excluding national prejudice,taking learning as public and learning without borders,and standing on theposition of "cultural relativism" to explore and understand the history of Chinese art.This paper mainly explores the achievements and problems of the unique methods adopted in the research of Gao Juhan’s Chinese art history,so as to objectively and comprehensively evaluate his contribution to the Chinese art history.The first part is mainly to explore the relationship between Gao Juhan’s multiple identities and the study of Chinese painting history.His Sinologist status and art historian status of painting history from two dimensions at home and abroad,and expounds and combs them.Finally,the authoradvocates that we should treat the research methods of Gao Juhan’s Chinese painting history dialectically,abandon the concept of binary opposition,abandon the national prejudice,stand in an objective angle,and strive to promote the docking and exchange of Chinese and Western cultures,and explore Common aesthetic needs.
