Ferdinand hodler was an outstanding Swiss painter in the 19 th century and one of the pioneers of art nouveau and modern painting.His works combine realism,naturalism,symbolism,idealism and expressionism.Under the influence of traditional art,hodler developed a new artistic outlook and artistic concept--the theory of parallelism through continuous exploration,which has an ununderestimated influence on modern European painting,especially youth style painting and expressionism painting.Hodler’s life is a life of exploration.He stops at various schools to explore the painting style that can express his emotion and ideology.This paper takes his unique artistic style as the research object,synthesises hodler’s growth experience and historical background,and analyzes the causes of hodler’s painting style.This paper discusses the relationship between the presentation of techniques and the connotation of works by interpreting the language of picture forms.While studying hodler’s works,we also discuss the hidden meaning and emotion behind the expression and symbol in his works,and finally explore hodler’s personal achievements and contributions in painting and the influence of his artistic style on home and abroad.
