Problems In English Textbooks Of Chinese Culture And Their Solutions

With the implementation of “Going out” policy in China and the development of English teaching of Chinese culture in universities,English textbooks of Chinese culture with high quality are required to facilitate with the English teaching activities and improve the intercultural communication competence of English learners.Too much emphasis laid on the learning of target-language culture has led to English learners' aphasia of Chinese culture,hindering the “going out” of Chinese culture.To tackle this problem,many colleges and universities have opened English courses related to Chinese culture,driving the compilation and publication of the related English textbooks of Chinese culture.The quality of the textbooks of Chinese culture currently used in colleges and universities in China varies.In order to improve the quality of Chinese culture courses offered by Chinese universities for English majors,and improve the quality of English textbooks of Chinese culture,this thesis analyzes some published textbooks in this kind.With the methods of documentary analysis and comparative analysis,this thesis makes a detailed study on some published English textbooks of Chinese culture,especially the textbooks published after the putting forward of the “Going out” policy.It has been found that there are many problems of these textbooks,and categorizing and analyzing these problems can help to improve the quality of English textbooks of Chinese culture.After the analysis,five main problems are listed: wrong description of Chinese culture,incomprehensive description of Chinese culture,use of unauthentic English,non-authoritative references,and unreasonable exercise for learners.In view of these problems,this thesis proposes corresponding solutions.The quality of English textbooks of Chinese culture will be solved by improving the academic competence of editors of English textbooks of Chinese culture,adopting the mode of cooperation between Chinese scholars and overseas sinologists and using more authoritative references.
