Most of the researches on dictionaries focus on the interpretation,but few on the illustration of dictionaries.At present,the study of dictionary illustrations has not attracted enough attention,however,it plays an important role in Chinese learners' language acquisition.Therefore,the author selects the illustrations of monolingual extroverted learning dictionaries as the starting point.The illustrations of two dictionaries,the Chinese Dictionary of Business Library and Longman medium English dictionary are taken as the research objects.To explore the similarities and differences between them in the elements and modes of illustration setting.By comparing and learning from each other,we can learn from strengths and complement weaknesses,so as to optimize the illustration configuration of monolingual extroverted learning dictionaries.First of all,the illustration elements and patterns of the two dictionaries are discussed in detail.Then,based on the theory of Structural Semantics,this paper compares the similarities and differences between them,and puts forward some suggestions for the optimization of their dictionaries.And provides some suggestions for the illustration setting of learning dictionaries and the principles to be followed.The introduction part is mainly to clarify the research object,to elaborate the previous research results,as well as the research content and methods of the topic.The first chapter is the explanation of dictionary and dictionary illustration.This part discusses the history of dictionaries,the feasibility of explaining words with pictures and the significance of dictionary illustrations.Explores the whole process of the study of dictionary illustrations as well as the important significance and role of the study of illustrations.Chapter two and chapter three are the specific analysis of the illustrations of the two dictionaries.On the one hand,it is the analysis of the elements of illustration,on the other hand,it is the analysis of the pattern of illustration.Among them,the element analysis of illustrations is divided into core elements and peripheral elements.The core elements include the semantic,grammatical and pragmatic functions of illustrations.Peripheral elements include the number,color and location of illustrations.The first mock exam is slightlydifferent.There are four kinds of illustrations in the business dictionary of Chinese language: 1+1 pattern,1+2 schema,1+ multimode and 1+? pattern.Based on the first four models,the illustrations in Longman medium English dictionary are made up of contrast illustrations and composition illustrations.The fourth chapter is the comparison and suggestion between Business Library Chinese dictionary and Longman medium English dictionary.The fourth chapter is the comparison and suggestion between Business Library Chinese dictionary and Longman medium English dictionary.According to the above analysis,the advantages of dictionary illustration configuration are summarized: reasonable quantity and rich color;prominent semantic,grammatical and pragmatic functions;various illustration modes,which basically achieve the equivalence of graphics and texts.At the same time,some suggestions are put forward for the arrangement of dictionary illustrations in the future: reasonably increasing the arrangement of illustrations;combining direct interpretation with auxiliary interpretation;taking noun verb as the main part of speech,taking into account other parts of speech;paying attention to displaying cultural information;setting illustrations in multiple modes or making use of group diagrams for illustration arrangement;appropriate amount of repeated information illustrations;avoiding bad information and incorrect illustrations.Finally,the principles that should be followed in the arrangement of dictionary illustrations are summarized: reasonable quantity;rich color matching;outstanding features;active content;equivalence of pictures and texts;proper repetition;combination,comparative memory.The conclusion part explains the positive significance of the optimized arrangement of dictionary illustrations,as well as the innovation and deficiency of this paper.Language learning is not only the study of language,but also the communication of culture and thinking mode.Excellent illustration setting can not only improve the progress of language learning,but also promote the exchange and integration of different ideas.
