Schema is the form and method of people's summary of past experience.It is one of the stored forms of knowledge in the brain and can help people better build their own knowledge system.Schema theory,which was originally an important part in cognitive psychology,has proven effective in guiding reading after years of development.According to the schema theory,reading comprehension is the process of interaction between the knowledge system in the reader's mind and the information provided by the textual material.When the schema in the reader's memory is linked to and matched by the textual material information,the content of the linguistic material can be understood.In the second language learning,it guides students to employ the schema that has already existed and identify with reading materials during the process.And it has proven that this theory can effectively improve reading efficiency.The study of Chinese reading comprehension based on schema theory has made great progress.In face of cloze-filling difficulty for students,this thesis applies the schema theory to practical teaching,trying to apply it to clozes in HSK Level 5 tests.Through the teaching experiments on the HSK Level 5 students in TCFL,it is proven that the cloze teaching method under the guidance of schema theory can improve the reading proficiency of foreign students.The research methods in this paper mainly involve inductive statistical methods and experimental methods.In the experiment,past examination papers are sorted out based on the genre,theme and questions.16 undergraduate students at China University of Petroleum(Beijing)are chosen as the experimental subjects.According to the test scores,students are divided into experimental and control groups with comparable reading levels.Through the use of schema theory,the specific teaching of cloze reading is designed and implemented.In the process,linguistic schemas,content schemas,and formal schemas are to be activated and built.After the teaching,the two groups are post-tested.Through the data analysis,we can find that the cloze reading instruction under the guidance of schema theory is conducive to improving the reading competence and learning strategies of foreign students.At the same time,it also cultivates students' interest in learning and deepens the understanding of Chinese culture,so it proves effective in practical teaching.This experiment suggests that under the guidance of schema theory,students can enrich and expand the basic language knowledge,the cultural background knowledge related to the second language,the text structure and genre framework knowledge of the reading materials.It helps them become more qualified for tests,and enhances their communication skill and creative spirit.
