The study of materials is not only an indispensable topic in modern and contemporary art,but also provides more possibilities for the future development of wood sculpture.This topic is to discuss the "new life" of wood sculpture as the core,with the rich contemporary wood sculpture as the main research material.In modern and contemporary wood sculpture works,wood material has not only been used as a medium to carry objects and forms,but also a multidimensional and comprehensive expression of the work in space,field,concept,and viewer.Among them appeared the new birth force in the wood material sculpture.When the wood material is placed in the traditional context,its properties and functions mainly become the connecting tools and communication methods.The wood material becomes the bridge between the modeling and the creator,who expresses the modeling itself with the help of the wood material.Obviously,wood material only provides some imaginative possibilities and expansibility of modeling for the creator--the "whisper" between wood material and modeling.Because the noumenon of wood material is covered,"aphasia" often appears when it enters the contemporary context.In the contemporary context,wood materials fully reflect the ontological nature of wood materials in the main role of the work,the creator began to gradually put down his own body,trying to let the wood materials to tell their own,and even the language of the creator are wood materials to state.Therefore,when dealing with wood materials,the creator pays great attention to the material noumenon and physical nature--natural property,physical nature,social nature and cultural nature.Sculpture is a form of art that is both visual and physical,so when wood materials are used for sculpture,some uniqueness is revealed.Its creation methods have been developed for many times,and there are mainly three kinds.First,wood materials arecompletely translated into other things as a medium.Secondly,wood materials are directly used or simply shaped;Third,the wood material performance own attribute or with other material fusion.The works created by them are still confined to the physical properties of wood materials and subject and object dualism.The latter,however,emphasizes the process of sculpting,avoids being trapped in the argument that results are the most important,and focuses on the aftertaste and concept of thinking.When wood materials are put into Chinese culture,the physical properties of wood materials will be greatly expanded.It not only refers to things,but also to me,so as to form the integration of things and things.This kind of integration is not only a good destination for philosophy,but also a path for creators and wood materials.The language of the creator and the language of wood materials are by no means just a dialogue,but the whole of the work,whether it is the process of the sculpture or the presentation of the sculpture results,there will be some deficiencies.In a word,the performance of the material nature of wood materials is not to erase the role of the creator,but to remove the creation of wood materials from the opposition between the subject and the object,so as to increase the freedom and breadth of the creation of wood materials.
