A Brief Analysis Of The Image Space In Immendorff's Painting

Space is a fundamental dimension and channel through which mankind understand society and itself.It measures freedom and embodies sensibility.Space image in Immendorff'works is a metaphor for human society and reality.That is why his works is closely linked to his times.Oppression of power is everywhere.So are various forces.And Immendorff who lives in that society himself returns to easel painting in response to its oppression.This thesis involves contemporary space theory and background of both domestic and overseas research.Chapter I is an introduction to artists' changing understanding of painting space from the perspective of western art history.Chapter II narrates the social space in which Immendorff lives,trying to understand the relationship between painting space and geographical space,and the symbolism thereof,through looking at the geographical space and times of him.It is also discussed how he is related to physical space and how his works shifted from the expression of behavioral concepts to the structuring of a spiritual world through easel painting.Chapter III talks about the space image and metaphor in Immendorff's works.The social implication,conception and spatial relationship within a society contained in café Deutschland are the focus of this part.Chapter IV discusses Immendorff's works' position in general space by examining his idea of his own art creation,the style of his works,as well as criticism and controversy over his works.Chapter V looks at the impact of his painting on Chinese artist,Ma Lu and Jia Di Fei.All the chapters combined explores the social space and specific expression of Immendorff's works to illustrate how he effectively connects reality beyond canvas to painting as a means.Artists are supposed to be reminded that art is not the only thing worth attention.Creation should also be pondered upon from the perspective of individual experience,pop culture and social existence.
